October 21, 2015 “A New Train of Thought”

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”        (Romans 12:2)

God Morning and Blessed  Day Everyone!

I wonder how many of you had model trains as a kid. For that matter, I wonder how many of you still have one as an adult! I love model trains, though as I boy, my brother and I were somewhat, shall we say…”abusive”…of our trains. We’d build ramps and set them flying off the tracks at high speeds, crashing into cardboard buildings that we had erected for that purpose. In order to accomplish this dubious task, we’d crank up the transformer as high as it would allow and watch the hapless train rocket off the track. Not very smart! I sure wish I still had that great engine. Somehow, it was destroyed (for the life of me, I can’t figure out what caused it).  Let’s take a different “train of thought” and think a bit about the power source and forget about the train for a minute. The power source was the transformer. Just what is a transformer? Well, the dictionary definition describes it like this:  A  transformer is “A device used to transfer electric energy from one circuit to another, especially a pair of multiply wound, inductively coupled wire coils that effect such a transfer with a change in voltage, current, phase, or other electric characteristic.” In simpler terms, it serves as an energy transfer. It brings one source of energy to another place. The apostle Paul uses the word “transform” referring to the necessity of the “renewing of the mind.” In other words, our minds require a power source outside of our own to allow it to function as it was designed. It needs to be ‘renewed”. It needs to be revived. The source of power required to “transform” our mind comes from our Creator, and is accessed through prayer.  This is what renews the mind. This is what revives it.

I have heard many Christians today speak of the need of spiritual revival in our nation. National revival begins with personal revival…the revival that comes from a renewed mind, transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Christian author A.W. Tozer suggests,

Prayer for revival will prevail when it is accompanied by radical amendment of life; not before.

Christians longing for a revived nation, or even a revived church, need to realize that real revival begins with a “radical amendment of life” personally, and not before. In keeping with our theme, that means we need to develop a new “train of thought” regarding how we will live our lives. Personal transformation is the bedrock of widespread revival. Hook up with the Divine Transformer that the engine of your mind might be renewed, and then see that locomotive of revival begin to roar. Let’s pray!

Good and gracious God of Power and Might; Transform our minds that revival might come…revival in our personal lives…revival in our family…revival in our church community…revival in our city…revival in our nation…revival in our world. Transform us by the renewing of our minds, we pray, in Jesus’ Mighty name! Amen
