October 17, 2015 “Heart Fortification”

“Such things as you are saying have not been done, but you are inventing them in your own mind.” For all of them were trying to frighten us, thinking, “They will become discouraged with the work and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands.” (Nehemiah 6: 8-9)

Good Morning and a blessed Saturday Everyone!!

Have you ever been discouraged in some endeavor because of the doubtful, sometimes taunting discourse of others who say things like “You will never be able to do such a thing”, or “there’s no way possible for anyone to do what you are undertaking.”  It’s one of the most familiar and often employed deceptions of the Enemy, who attempts to fill our minds with doubt and discouragement. In our lives, we are not always surrounded by believers. There are those with whom we work, with whom we socialize, or perhaps even with whom we live who scoff at the very notion of prayer, and even the very existence of God. Such discouragers are useful and quite effective “tools” when duped by the Father of Lies. In the case of Nehemiah, this doubt took the form of opposition from his enemies who continuously sent out ill reports regarding his God-given task of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. Nehemiah’s response to these discouraging reports was two-fold. He sent the reply, “Such things as you are saying have not been done, but you are inventing them in your own mind.” (Nehemiah 6:8). Then he put the matter to God with the prayer, “But now, O God, strengthen my hands.” Nehemiah had fortified his heart and made a choice to stand on God’s faithfulness, ignoring the taunting lies of his enemies.  When we pray, we can be sure that we pray to a God well able and ready to respond, especially when it is a God-given task we have undertaken. Do not be discouraged. “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9). “Now, O God, strengthen my hands”. That’s heart fortification! Let’s get to work! Let’s pray!

Faithful and Ever-Present Lord, guard our hearts from doubt and discouragement, understanding it to be a deception from the father of lies. As you have directed us in some undertaking, grant us the faith to understand that you are always present as we put our trust in You. Now, strengthen our hands as we labor in your service, that we might proceed from victory unto victory. We ask this in the name of your beloved son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
