October 12, 2015 “The Divine Quarterback”

“The Lord appeared to him from afar, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3)

Good Morning Dear Brothers and Sisters In Christ!

Like many of you, I am a football fan. My first interest in the game started in 1960 when I was all of eleven years old. That year, the Philadelphia Eagles, led by a quarterback named Norm Van Brocklin were the champions of the NFL. This was before the Super Bowl Era, when there were basically two divisions…East and West. In that championship game, the Eagles defeated the legendary Green Bay Packers. Even then I understood the importance of having the right man at the helm. I had confidence in Van Brocklin throwing a touchdown pass to my favorite player, Tommy McDonald. The duo accomplished this successfully throughout the season. The Eagles won that year, as I hoped and believed they would.

Throughout the years, there have been other great quarterbacks that have instilled such confidence in their fans. Fans will recognize the names of  Starr, Staubach, Elway, Unitis, Favre, Marino, Montana, Bradshaw, Manning, Rodgers, Brady…(this list could go on), have electrified their fan base with their leadership qualities. Fans felt hope if the game was on the line and these field generals had control of the ball, even with mere minutes left in the game.

When we pray, we pray to a ‘”quarterback” who never fails, because His love never fails. How reassuring it is to know that we can put all our hopes, all our requests, all our supplications into the all-powerful hands of the God Who loves us unfailingly. An unknown author put it this way:

“The great thing in prayer is to feel that we are putting our supplications into the bosom of omnipotent love.”

Knowing that we are praying to such a One is so reassuring. It brings peace to the anxious heart understanding that God’s love for us is everlasting and never-failing. Even when prayers are not answered in the way we would hope or expect, we know that ultimately it is for our good, for God always has our best interests in mind. That’s the way of his love. That’s the nature of his grace. Do not despair. When the game is on the line, trust our “Divine Quarterback” to see us through. He loves us with an “everlasting love.”  With such a One directing our lives, we cannot lose. Let’s pray!

“O Love that will not let me go; I rest my weary soul in Thee. I give Thee back the life I owe that in Thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be.” In Thee, O Lord, do we put all our trust and confidence, for You have loved us with an everlasting love which never fails. hear our prayers made in the name of Your most Beloved Son, Christ our Lord. Amen!”
