September 23, 2014 “Cruise Control”

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?” (Isaiah 40:21)

Good morning Everyone!

For those of us living in the United States, today marks the first day of the new fall season. Oh, I suppose it could be argued that it really began with the return of football, but technically, it is today. I wonder how you will spend this first day of the new season? For me, it will be a trip to the hospital for some much-needed corrective surgery, so if you miss a few of these daily postings for the next week or so, you’ll know the reason why. Though I am not particularly looking forward to it, I consider it to be a good thing for the benefits I will derive from it.

So…back to football for a moment. I enjoy both college and pro football, but am particularly interested in the weekly rankings that come out…rankings that will ultimately determine which four teams, at the end of the season, will vie for the title of National Champion. It is important for those striving for that honor to get off with as strong a start as possible. An untimely loss or two at the beginning of the season may result in a particular team failing to reach that goal. So, to the point of things today, I would like to encourage you to get off to as good a start as possible with the beginning of this new season. If you missed yesterday’s post, you might want to revisit it. In that post, I spoke of my favorite verse of scripture…Genesis 1:1, and my reasons for favoring it. It speaks of beginnings. Today’s verse is similar, and is a reminder spoken by God through the prophet Isaiah, who calls people through some rhetorical questions to remember that which was demonstrated and conveyed to them since the time of creation. God asks, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told to you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?”  These are not questions form a God who does not already know the answer to each one. These are the types of questions a parent would ask of a child when he or she has said or done something contrary to what they have been taught consistently. The answer to each question is a resounding Yes! Feigning or pleading ignorance is no excuse. Of course we know! Of course we have heard! Of course it has been told us from the beginning. Of course we have understood from the evidence of creation.  God has made himself plain through the things he has said and done. He has made sure we would get off to a good start.  But getting off to a good start, as important as that is, is not the whole of it. We must persevere and not just set our lives on some sort of cruise control.

The late baseball manager Sparky Anderson, who managed the legendary “Big Red Machine”, the Cincinnati Reds, and later the Detroit Tigers, to world championships, once observed, “Good seasons start with good beginnings.”  Let’s make this a good season. Get off to a good beginning with God through prayer, worship, and by delving into his Word. Then, follow it through each and every day. Let’s pray!

Lord of All or days and seasons; Daily may we walk with you, fellowship with you, grow to emulate you in thought, word, and deed, striving for the crown that awaits those who would persevere to the end. Thank you for this new season. May it be a season full of wonderful discoveries of your goodness and grace. This we pray in Jesus’ Most Holy Name. Amen!
