August 31, 2015 “God’s Desk Drawer”

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11)

Good Monday Morning Everyone!

For some unknown reason, I seem to have a knack for winning things. Over the years, I have won countless prizes from many radio contests where the listener is invited to call in with the answer to some trivia question or another. I have won prizes in drawings, chili cook-offs, and even some local television show games. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed free concerts, dinners out, autographed baseballs, and even a few trips. I remember one particular radio call-in that simply wanted to know what unusual objects were in your desk drawer. Mine was chock full of a myriad collection of “stuff” that had accumulated in there over the years…pens, coupons, paper clips, tape measures, a stick or two of gum…you get the idea. I would not be at all surprised if you do not have such a drawer in your office or home with similar items stashed away. When I was growing up and in need of some simple object to complete a task my mom or dad would often suggest that I “go look in the desk drawer.” More often than not, I would find exactly what I needed therein.

Are you in need of some particular solution to a challenge you are facing in your life right now? May I offer a suggestion? Why not seek for that needed answer to your particular situation in God’s desk drawer. How do you access this “drawer”? You do so through asking. You do so through prayer. The great American evangelist Dr. Billy Graham once noted,

“Heaven is full of answers to prayer for which no one bothered to ask”

Jesus reminds us to ask, saying to us,  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”  Jesus clearly reminds us of three things in saying this:   1) We are evil. We are born with a sin problem, and compared to God, the highest standard, there is no way we come off as being righteous on our own. Our only righteousness comes from that which is imputed to us as we come to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior. 2) Despite the fact that we are evil, we still have within us the capacity to do good things, like giving good gifts to our children, 3) Knowing these two things…that we are evil and yet possess the capacity to do good things should lead us to the understanding that, 3) our Father in heaven, who is totally good and righteous and holy, is more than ready to “give what is good to those who ask him.”

What an astounding invitation! God’s desk drawer is full of good things, and we are invited to ask for what we need, knowing that God stands ready to give us of his goodness freely. As Billy Graham so glibly stated, there are more prayer answers in heaven than have even been asked. Do not be hesitant in approaching the Throne of Grace with your requests. Know that God’s desk drawer is full of good things. I am sure that you will be supplied with just what you need if you only ask. Let’s pray!

All good and perfect gifts come from You, O Lord. Help me to understand that the Throne of Grace is called that because it is a place abounding with the unmerited favor of your love for me. How I praise and thank you, my Lord. Amen!
