August 8, 2018 “A Biblical Super-Hero”

“Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.” James 5: 17-18)

Good Morning Faith-Prayers!

Abraham…Moses…Joseph…David…Daniel…Elijah…Mary…Hannah…Ruth…Peter…John…Paul…every Christian knows of these heroes of the faith and the way God worked powerfully through them. Have you ever thought to yourself  “If only I could connect with God the way these people did! If only I had that sort of relationship with God. These people saw and did miraculous things! I wish I could have the sort of relationship with God as they did! I wish I were a biblical super-hero!  ”  The fact of the matter is, according to this passage in James, we most certainly can be! James reminds us of one of the great heroes of the faith, the prophet Elijah. Now Elijah , we are told, “prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain.” Just before reminding us of this, though, James tells us that “Elijah was a human being, even as we are. Elijah was not some sort of a super-hero. He did not possess the power to control the weather himself. His “power” over  meteorological conditions was prayer power…a God-granted prayer answer…the same power that is available to all believers. I do believe that it is important to note that James reminds us that it was ‘earnest prayer” on Elijah’s part that brought forth the desired result of his prayer. His was no ordinary, half-hearted, not-really-believing sort of prayer. It was intense and earnest. The great news is that Elijah was no different from us. We have the ability and the opportunity to pray like that, as well as the expectation that God most certainly has the capability to answer our earnest prayers. So go ahead! Pray boldly. Pray like Elijah and Abraham and Moses and Joseph. Pray like David and Daniel and Mary and Hannah. Pray like Ruth, Peter, John, and Paul. They were human just like us. You are just like them! Let’s pray!

Glorious God; It is with earnest expectation that we gather before your Throne of Grace today. We pray believing that you hear every one of our prayers, every one of our praises, every one of our requests. Increase our faith, Lord, as we learn to pray with confidence each day. This we pray in Jesus’ blessed Name. Amen!
