August 7, 2015 “A Blessed People”

“What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him?”  (Deuteronomy 4:7)

Good Morning Everyone!

Last evening, I joined many across the nation in watching the first of the presidential debates and listened as seventeen individuals, each expressing a desire to become the next elected president of the United States, made their case regarding their particular leadership qualities as they answered specific questions posed to them by a panel of three. As I listened, I was once again reminded of the blessings of living in such a great and blessed nation as the United States of America where the aspirations of many are not stifled, but encouraged when it comes to national leadership. Those of us so privileged as to call this nation our home are truly blessed.

I have enjoyed the great blessing of  having visited many of the most inspiring destinations this great country of ours has to offer. I have seen the majestic cathedral mountains of Colorado, the stately redwoods of California, the roaring foam of Niagara Falls. I have traveled from coast to coast …stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, walked portions of the Appalachian Trail, and watched the breaching of humpbacks off the coast of Alaska with magnificent glaciers as a backdrop. As the song puts it so well, “America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.” To God be the glory!

Our God is well deserving of our prayerful devotion, our thanks, and our praise. Realizing how truly blessed we are as a nation should turn our hearts to the One who has shed His grace upon us. It should turn our hearts to prayer. But it isn’t just to any pseudo-god we turn… It is to the One True God…the One revealed to us in His Holy Word…the One of whom scripture speaks of as the King of Glory…the One whose Name is above every name. It is the God who sent his Only Begotten Son Jesus to bear the sin of all humanity on the cross of Calvary. While it is true that there are other “gods” worshiped by other nations, and even by people of our own fair land, these  so-called “gods” are nothing more than pale imitations of the One Who spoke the world into being, the One to whom we turn this day in humble devotion. He alone is Lord. “What other nation is so great as to have their gods near to them the way that our God is near to us whenever we pray to him?” Only those people who recognize, worship, and acknowledge the Lord our God! Let’s pray!

Very God of Very God; You alone are worthy of praise. It is to you and you alone that we make our prayers. It is to you alone that we bend the knee in humble submission. Continue to bless this fair land of ours that we may be a shining beacon of liberty and a land where it can truly be said, ‘In God We Trust.’ Hear our prayers of praise this day, we implore you, in Jesus’ Mighty name. Amen
