May 6, 2015 “Frizzy Lap Dog”

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)

Good Morning Dear Friends!

I am so glad that you’ve stumbled upon this posting this morning, and if you are here deliberately, welcome back, and thank you! Nine years ago, Lydia and I were blessed with one of the great joys of our life. We were living in St. Joseph, MO at the time, along with our daughter Candace, who really wanted us to get a little dog. We traveled to an animal shelter in nearby Kansas City where we found a small Bichon Frise… (for the uninformed, that’s French for frizzy lap dog”)… and immediately knew that this was the perfect dog for us. Just a little more than a month of bringing her home, I had a heart attack and open heart surgery. During my convalescence, Sassy, (the name she came with), was my constant companion. Soon, she made

her way right into our hearts. When Candace went off to college, Lydia and I became her “Grammy and Pap Pap“, and have taken care of her ever since. She has traveled all across the nation with us…From Missouri to Florida…from Las Vegas to Amarillo…from North Carolina and back to Florida. She’ll be with us wherever our Lord calls us to be…including heaven! “Heaven did you say?” Yes, heaven! Lydia has assured me if the Rapture occurs before we shed this mortal coil. she is going to quickly grab Sassy so she may come as well. In fact, I do not believe that will even be necessary, for heaven is a place of unspeakable joy, and the place God has prepared for us will be filled with perfect happiness. For both of us, that includes having our little puppy with us. Some may question my theology at this point and rightly state that animals, however endearing they may be, are not made in the image of God, nor do they possess the same body, soul, and spirit as do we who have been fashioned in God’s image. They have never consciously sinned. Even the most savage of beasts has no hatred of God or penchant for unrighteousness, save for the consequences of the Fall of humanity. So how can I be so sure that Sassy will be there with us? The Biblical support I offer is found in this verse from Revelation: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” Heaven is a place of complete joy. Evangelist Billy Graham put it very well when he said,

“God will prepare everything for our perfect happiness in heaven, and if it takes my dog being there, I believe he’ll be there.”

God, the “giver of every good and perfect gift”, gave us this wonderful dog on this side of the veil. I do not believe he will take her away on the other! Don’t fret that your beloved companions will not be with you in heaven. It’s just perfect there. You can count on it! Let’s pray!

Lord God; your abounding love for us is greater than we can even imagine. You have blessed us abundantly in this life, which is but a precursor to that which is laid up for us in heaven. My heart is full of praise and amazement of your grace and mercy, and I give you all the glory this new day. Amen!
