April 1, 2015 “The Court Jester”

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7)

Good morning everyone!

I am here to let you in on something that I’ve never really posted in one of these daily missives before, but have come to understand finally: Whatever it is that makes you happy makes God happy, because he loves you so much. Isn’t it clear from scripture that this is the case? God so loved the world that he sent his beloved Son Jesus into the world so we could be happy in whatever it is that makes us happy. I understand that this is somewhat of a paraphrase, but that seems to be the gist of John 3:16, doesn’t it? God’s greatest delight is derived from our happiness, so whatever makes us happy makes God happy! Hey…APRIL FOOLS!

Of course, that is most certainly not the case. Were that true, we’d have to admit that there are many sinful pleasures that, while making us “happy”, are certainly displeasing to God. Acting foolish may make us laugh…even bring some measure of delight, but be an anathema before our Holy Lord. Admittedly, there are certain directives laid out by God that may seem, on the surface, to be overly restrictive and unnecessarily strict, but it is the wise person who strives to follow God’s directives, which are always for our benefit. In fact, so beneficial is adherence to God’s Word that the very first of the proverbs states that The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.” “The fear of the Lord”…that means, “the understanding that God is altogether Holy and to be held in the highest reverence in our heart, soul, and mind, is where all human knowledge finds its foundation. God , first and foremost, is holy. He is Lord. He is to be feared. He is not our “pal” or our “buddy”. He is our God. He is not a court jester come to make us laugh at his antics so we can be happy. He is the holy, eternal, immutable, unchanging, omnipotent, all-knowing God. That is the first thing we humans are to understand. The fool is described as the person who rejects that reality, who scorns wisdom and instruction regarding a right relationship with God and a proper understanding of his nature as it relates to our own.

Some years ago, there was a song released called “If I Ruled The World.” One of the verses of the song suggests:

If I ruled the world every man would say the world was his friend
There’d be happiness that no man could end
No my friend, not if I ruled the world.

Sentimental claptrap! If I ruled the world, there would be chaos, confusion, and catastrophe. If I ruled the world, there would be sickness, sorrow, and sin. If I ruled the world, there would be hatred, hunger, and heartache. I would ask this…how’s that worked out for you? Humanity has been attempting to do just that since the Fall in Eden, and what I just described pretty much defines human history.  Pastor John Sale said this of the wisdom of God:

“God is all wise. In perfect wisdom He determined and executes His will. Someone has said: “If I had the power of God, there are many things that I would change; but if I had the wisdom of God, I would not change a thing.”

God possesses wisdom and power. Knowledge begins when we submit to His wisdom and his instruction. He’s not the court jester…He is our Lord and our God. Fear Him! Revere Him! Let’s pray!

God of Timeless Ages; In You, all knowledge and wisdom has its source. In You we find wise instruction and genuine joy. Lead us to wisdom’s source as we bow before in this new day. This we pray in Jesus’ most holy Name. Amen!
