March 31, 2015 “Kamikaze Foolishness”

“The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” (Psalm 14:1)

“Professing to be wise, they became fools…And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind” (Romans 1: 22, 28)

Good morning Everyone! This is the day the Lord has made! Let’s rejoice and be glad in it!

Though I am not an historian, I was awake in history class long enough (or could it have been, perhaps, in the movie theater), to remember that towards the end of WWII, when the tide of battle had turned in favor of the Allied forces, certain Japanese airmen called Kamikaze pilots, in a desperate attempt to once again swing the pendulum of the conflagration’s inevitable outcome in their favor, undertook suicidal missions, flying their planes intentionally into ships and land targets at the cost of their own lives.Such desperate foolishness! I remember my dad once saying of them, “If there had been more pilots like them, there would have been fewer pilots like them.” As a kid, it took me a little while to understand the wisdom in this seemingly contradictory conundrum, but now I get it, and smile when I remember.

Just recently, I came across a quote by a Christian writer and apologist named G.K. Chesterton who made a similar observation regarding those who are self-proclaimed atheists. His simple logic is essentially irrefutable. Chesterton coyly observed,

“If there were no God, there would be no atheists.”

What Chesterton is saying is crystal-clear. To define one’s self as an atheist, one must at first presume that there truly is a God, or the very term “atheist” would be meaningless. To declare non-belief of that which does not exist in the first place, if they are correct, is folly from the start. There are no real “atheists”, but rather, as Paul calls such people, “God haters.” It is utter nonsense. The Psalmist is correct when he declares, “The fool has said in his heart ‘There is no God.'” The futility of atheism is akin to the failed Kamikaze effort of WWII…its foolishness leads to death and destruction, not merely of body, but of soul and spirit as well. God is! He lives! Paul declares, ” I am not ashamed of the gospel,  for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Don’t be a fool. Believe it! Let’s pray!

O Ancient of Days; Open my eyes of understanding that day by day, I may behold more of Your glory…know more of your grace…declare more of Your goodness…experience more of Your love, and live a life so reflective of these things that others may come to understand and believe as well. I pray this all in Jesus’ wonderful name. Amen!
