February 17, 2015 “Simply Irresistible”

“I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous,  your handmade sky-jewelry, Moon and stars mounted in their settings. Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, Why do you bother with us? Why take a second look our way?”(Psalm 8: 3-4)

Good Morning Beloved of God!

Up until a few days ago, February 14 to be exact, the airways of television and radio, along with billboards and online ads, reminded us that Valentine’s Day was upon us. We were led to believe in no uncertain terms of those things that would bring the greatest delight to our beloved…things like giant stuffed animals, chocolate-covered strawberries, bouquets of fresh flowers that would be delivered just in time for that momentous day. If you were so inclined, a star named in his or her honor could also be “purchased” for a nominal fee. But all men know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, right?

In today’s passage from Psalm 8, we read of God’s “handmade sky-jewelry”…the moon and the stars, mounted majestically against the backdrop of the dark, enormous macro-sky. Now there’s a gift! But not only has God expressed his love for us with such dazzling gifts as these. He has shown us in countless ways throughout all our days, and not just when February 14 happens to roll around. The world around displays his goodness everywhere. Mother Teresa of Calcutta expressed it well. She once said,

“God made the world for the delight of human beings– if we could see His goodness everywhere, His concern for us, His awareness of our needs: the phone call we’ve waited for, the ride we are offered, the letter in the mail, just the little things He does for us throughout the day. As we remember and notice His love for us, we just begin to fall in love with Him because He is so busy with us — you just can’t resist Him. I believe there’s no such thing as luck in life, it’s God’s love, it’s His.”

God has given us dazzling wonders to behold, most certainly. But along with that, day by day, he shows his love in those things we often take for granted. It might be a timely phone call from a dear one, or a much needed ride to the store. It could be seeing your new grandchild for the first time, or even a refreshing night’s sleep after a long, tiring day. Learn to see and appreciate God’s love for you in both the grand displays and the small wonders. As Mother Teresa noted, “ He is so busy with us- you just can’t resist Him…It’s God’s love, it’s His!” Let’s pray!

Loving Lord; Open the eyes of my heart to understand the greatness of Your love in even those small blessings that you so meticulously and faithfully provide with each passing day. Who am I that I should be so loved? Who am I , my micro-self, that you should care so much for me? But you do, and I rejoice in that reality, and praise you forevermore. Amen!
