February 12, 2015 “The Rain Box”

“You’ve been cleaned up and given a fresh start by Jesus, our Master, our Messiah, and by our God present in us, the Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 6:11)

Good Morning Early (and not so Early) Risers! This is the day the Lord has made. Rejoice and be glad!

Today will be a real treat for our little Bichon Frise pup, Sassy…(she’s not really a puppy any more, but to us, she will forever be one). Sassy will get to engage in one of her favorite activities…a trip to the ‘Rain Box’. The ‘Rain Box’ is the name we gave to the shower years ago when Sassy really was just a pup. For some reason, she really took to the shower. She’s a bit prissy, and enjoys being bathed, primped, and combed. Oh, and lest we forget, she also likes putting on a clean collar…one appropriate for a female dog, of course.

Most of us would agree that there’s something quite refreshing about a shower. Some of us start the day with one, while others enjoy a shower after a hard day’s work. Such is the sheer delight of a shower that some who would not deign do it elsewhere, actually sing!

Upon first coming to Christ, we’re rather like a stray dog who has been out wandering in the wilderness…hair matted and covered in mud and burrs, smelling bad, tired from the journey we’ve been on while looking for the way home. Then Christ finds us (he never gives up looking, you know). When he hears us howling for him, he rescues us, lovingly calling us to the sanctuary of his presence. He takes us in just as we are, but doesn’t leave us that way. Oh no! We are introduced to his “Rain Box’, where, as Paul says, we are cleaned up and given a fresh start by Jesus, our Master, our Messiah, and by our God present in us, the Spirit.”  Christian author Max Lucado puts it very well when he writes,

“God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus.”

He not only provides us shelter and safety…he gets to work transforming us into his likeness, giving us a fresh, clean start in him. And when we get to wandering, as we will do from time to time, he woos us back to his side. Is it time for you to find refreshment and get off to a clean start in life? Cry our to Jesus, your Master. He’ll take you in and transform scruffy you into a thing of beauty, showering you with his manifold blessings. Let’s pray!

Lord of Life; When we are weary from the struggle of life, we find rest and refreshment in your presence. When lost, you call us home. When covered with the load of sin, you cleanse us from all unrighteousness. A day in your presence is better than a thousand elsewhere. Thank you, dear Lord, for such amazing love…such amazing mercy…such amazing grace. Amen!
