February 10, 2015 “Looking For Magic”

“God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!” (Ephesians 3:20)

“Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” (Mark 10:15)

Good Morning Everyone! This is the day the Lord made for us, so let’s rejoice and be glad in it!

Before beginning this posting this morning, I was greeted by pictures of my grandson Iian busily decorating his Valentine’s box for kindergarten.  It is replete with hearts and colors and all those things that spring from the wondrous imagination of an excited little boy. Through the eyes of a child, the world is a magical place. A cardboard box becomes a suitable vehicle for taking a flight to Mars. A doll becomes a companion with whom to share a grand tea party. Blocks are transformed into fortresses where attacking dragons are thwarted. Fanciful nonsense? Oh no! Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of Heaven is to be understood through a child’s eyes, where every delightful, magical , daring dream is realized…and more! To deny it as mere folly is to miss out on it altogether! To begin to understand the sheer magnitude of it, God has done the most extraordinary things. He has created a universe so expansive that we’ll never unfold all of its hidden secrets. He has fashioned an array of creatures so diverse and unique that virtually every day, new discoveries are made regarding their nature and even their existence. Astoundingly, the One Who spoke all of these into being became a man Himself, bearing all our sins and transgressions on the cross that we might enjoy everlasting life and fellowship with Him forever. A child has little difficulty believing these things, for a child’s mind is full of wonder.  Christopher Moore, a writer of comic fantasy put it like this, writing:

“Children see magic because they look for it.”

When is the last time you looked for that which is truly magical? It doesn’t have to be limited to a trip to Disneyland. The glorious majesty of God’s creation…of God’s love…is all around you. Open your eyes. Like Dorothy stepping out of her Kansas home into the Land of Oz, from drabness to a world ablaze with dazzling color and wonder and life, allow yourself to contemplate the height and depth and width and breadth of God’s glory. As Paul wrote, “God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!”  Let’s pray!

Wondrous Lord; Open my eyes and my heart to the wonders of Your Kingdom…to the wonders of your love. Fill my thoughts with new insights into what it means to glorify you and to enjoy you forever. This I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
