January 24, 2015 “Going The Way”

“Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace” (Hebrews 13:9)

Good Morning Sisters and Brothers in Christ!

When I was a child, we lived just a few blocks from my home church, so most Sunday mornings we as a family would enjoy a nice walk to church. On one particular morning, as we were making the weekly trek to God’s House, we were approached by a young man, pamphlet in hand who had aligned himself with a cult group called “The Way International.” This was just one of many cult groups that seemed to be spring up like weeds in the mid to late 1960’s. But the short encounter we had with this proponent of a totally false doctrine is one I will never forget. The young man approached my father with his pamphlet and in a rather brusque fashion waved it at my dad inquiring “Do you know ‘the way'”. My father, in a loving tone, responded, “Yes, son, we’re going ‘the way’. Why not come with us to church.” Sadly, the young man simply turned away and sought his next unsuspecting, potential ‘convert.” I became curious about the doctrine of that cult group and soon discovered how salacious and deceptive it was regarding the truth of the Gospel. How sad yet how typical that the Enemy would incorporate the very identification given to Christians before the term “Christian” was widely used to deceive, for in the earliest days, Christians were called the people of “The Way”.  This counterfeit cult was just one example of such corruption and deception used by the Enemy, Satan, even from the earliest days of the faith. The writer of Hebrews, (most likely Paul), warned believers to not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace. Perversion of the truth has been a weapon in Satan’s arsenal from the very beginning. He used it effectively against Adam and Eve, and still employs it to this day. That is why it is so important for Christians to become real students of the Word. When Paul wrote of putting on the “whole armor of God”, the very first piece of the armor mentioned is the “belt of truth”. Jesus identifies himself as the embodiment of truth itself. Truth is liberating, and will keep our minds and hearts fixed on that which is real, not counterfeit. Christian pastor Andrew Storm admonishes,

“Know your HOLY GOD intimately. (When you have seen His glory, His holiness and His love – by drawing close to Him in prayer – then you can usually see through any counterfeits because you know the “real thing” so well).”

A keen and perceptive eye can easily distinguish a real gem from a cheap imitation. My dad gave a wise answer and an invitation to that deceived young man we encountered on that Lord’s Day so many years ago. He didn’t receive it then. My prayer is that at some time in his life he did, for dad was right…we were going “the way”.  Dad’s completed the journey that I am still in the process of completing. Won’t you join me? Let’s pray!

Lord of All; You are truly the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Guard my heart from the deceptive chicanery of the Enemy, that I may follow the path of righteousness all the days of my life. This I do pray in Jesus’ Great Name. Amen!
