January 9, 2015 “The ‘Imagi-Nation”

“God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. Glory to God in the church! Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus! Glory down all the generations! Glory through all millennia! Oh, yes!” (Ephesians 3: 20-21)

Good Morning Dear Friends!

Yes, I know that the Christmas season is past, but today I’d like to once again reference a scene from one of my favorite Christmas movies…Miracle On 34th Street! By the way…it was released in the summer of the year it first came out in the theaters, so it’s AOK! There is a scene in that film where Kris Kringle is speaking to a child raised by a very practical mother who has discouraged her regarding the sheer wonder of imagination. Kris tells the child of a wonderful nation known as the Imagi-Nation. It is a place where you could be making a trip to the moon one minute or traipsing through a jungle the next. In the “Imagi-nation”, one could be any animal or any person, or just about anything at all. From time to time, I like to break out the old tapes made when my children were little and watch again their own trips to this wondrous nation. I watch as my son Dan climbs into a cardboard box and flies to Mars. I watch my daughters become royalty before my very eyes. It is certainly a great gift given to each one of us by our Creator God and is one of the characteristics of His nature, demonstrating that we truly are made in his image. We do well to utilize this gift often. The late Christian author Francis Schaeffer wrote of it, saying,

“The Christian in the one whose imagination should fly beyond the stars.”

But even as we possess the capacity to imagine great and wondrous things, we can never out-imagine God. Paul put it very well in the referenced passage from Ephesians, writing “God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!” Rediscover that inner child and let your imagination soar, “for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Luke 18:16).

“Glory to God in the church!
Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus!
Glory down all the generations!
Glory through all millennia! Oh, yes!”   Let’s pray!

Magnificent Lord; Thank you for the great gift of the “imagi-nation”, for it demonstrates Your boundless nature to us, your boundless greatness…your boundless power…your boundless love….Thank you, Lord, for such a gift. I love you, my Sovereign! Amen!
