January 1, 2015 “The Acceptable Year”

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind,to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4: 16-20)

Good Morning and Happy New Year 2015 Everyone!

As we being this new “year of our Lord”, you have wondered, as have I, what is meant by the phrase “the acceptable year of the Lord”.  After reading these words from Isaiah’s prophesy in the synagogue, Jesus made the astounding Messianic claim that “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”  What was he really saying?

What is, “the acceptable year of the Lord?” This term, which Jesus quotes from Isaiah, is used no other place in the Bible. But the meaning is clear: It is the “year” in which the full plan and purpose of God is accomplished – this “year” being not a literal year, but the full cycle – the FINISHED cycle — of restoration in God’s redemptive plan. This “acceptable year of the Lord,” is what Jesus preached all through His ministry, and which He, Himself, came to accomplish. Jesus claimed to be the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation which God had ordained even before the foundation of the world. Even the very Name of Jesus bespeaks of this plan and this “acceptable year.” The name, “Christ,” is the Greek equivalent for MESSIAH – the anointed one. The name, “Jesus,” means, “He who saves.” Thus, the name Jesus Christ means, “the anointed One, the one who saves.” That day in Nazareth, Jesus said, “THIS DAY the scripture – Isaiah 61 — is fulfilled.” TODAY – right now – is that “day” as well. Do we understand that today we continue to live in, “the acceptable year of the Lord?”

Right now, January 1, 2015, “the acceptable year of the Lord,” continues!   Right now, and each day that follows, God is preaching the gospel to the poor; healing the brokenhearted, preaching deliverance to the captives, and restoring sight to the blind, and setting at liberty them that are bruised.” Everything Jesus announced that day was a part of HIS PURPOSE AND PLAN. He wants it all for us.

Do you truly desire that 2015 be a “Happy New year”, as we so casually mention to family and friends? It most certainly can and will be as we realize that this truly is “the acceptable year of the Lord, as every year has been since His incarnation, his life, his death, his glorious resurrection, and his ascension. As Jesus said some two thousand years ago in Nazareth before an astounded gathering in the synagogue, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”, so he speaks to all those living today who will hear and believe. Happy New Year everyone. God’s Salvation is here. Believe! Let’s pray!

O God, our Help in ages past…our Hope for years to come; You are truly the One Who makes all things new. Thank You, Heavenly Father, for revealing Your great redemptive plan to my heart and for the new life that is mine in You. May I honor Your Great Name throughout this new year in word and in deed. This I do pray in the name of my Redeemer, Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen!
