December 2, 2014 “The God Named ‘Jealous'”

“Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” (Exodus 34:14)

Good Morning Everyone!

“This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!” I like to begin my day reciting this verse from the 118th Psalm, giving God glory and praise. I realize that there are many in the world of other faiths that begin their day praising another “god”, and still others with no particular belief system whatsoever. For many in the Christian world, tolerance of these other “pseudo-religions” or “no-religions” might seem to be a loving gesture…sort of a “live-and-let-live” philosophy that demonstrates loving acceptance of other people and their belief systems. While on the surface this may seem desirable, it is, in fact, contrary to the Great Commission of Christ given to his followers just before has ascension into heaven where he commanded his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20).  Jesus never commanded his followers to “go and tolerate all people and their beliefs.” Nor did he say, “Remember, I am known by many names to many people, so everything’s fine  so long as belief is sincere.”  Take another look at the referenced verse at the top of this post:“Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” We often regard jealousy as a negative trait, but the God Who made us declares “Jealous” to be his name. To put any other person or idol on an equal level with the God who created us and everything that exists is an affront to the Almighty and not to be tolerated. Christian pastor and editor A.W. Tozer once wrote,

“We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum.”

Our commission as Christians is not to see to it that everyone gets along nicely…it is to make disciples of all nations. Tozer rightly notes that our message is an ultimatum from the altogether Holy God whose name is “Jealous.” Go, the, and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to live a life obedient to Jesus Christ, for He and he alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Let’s pray!

Holy Lord God; Fill my heart with new resolve to obediently and fearlessly fulfill the Great Commission, sharing the Good News of the Gospel with everyone I meet. May I do so , not with arrogance but humility…not with fear but with boldness…not with judgment but with firm conviction, for this I pray in Jesus’ Holy Name. Amen!
