November 21, 2014 “”Don’t be Deceived”

“Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” (2nd Corinthians 5:17)

Good Morning dear Friends!

Several years ago, I was privileged to serve a small congregation in Las Vegas, Nevada. One particularly memorable Sunday morning, renown impressionist Rich Little, the “man of a thousand voices”, was in attendance. I always admired his uncanny ability to do voice impressions of literally hundreds of celebrities, and was thrilled to have him join us for worship at the little church I served. After the service, I told him that having him there was like having an additional 100 people in attendance! Rich could vocally imitate lots of people…presidents, actors, and other people of renown. But no matter how convincing these impressions were, it did not change the fact that they weren’t really the actual voices of the people being imitated, but were, in fact, the work of a man very skilled in the art of imitation, making us believe that he was, for the sake of entertainment, the person being imitated. He was, and still is, Rich Little, created by the hand of God and redeemed by him, called to reflect His divine glory. This is the case of each one of us who know and love the Lord. because of this, we are hated by our enemy Satan, who, from the time of Adam and Eve, has sought to change our perspective as to who we truly are…image bearers of our creator God. Christian author Neil T. Anderson clarified this reality when he write,

“The major strategy of Satan is to distort the character of God and the truth of who we are. He can’t change God, and he can’t change our identity and position in Christ. If, however, he can get us to believe a lie, we will live as though our identity in Christ isn’t true.”

I am in complete agreement with Neil Anderson on this point. Satan has no power to change God, nor does he have the power to change our identity as image-bearers of Christ. So he works on the mind to deceive us into believing a lie…the lie believing that we are not that which we are created to be…the image-bearers of God. If we fall for the lie, we will live a life of deception and lose sight of who we really are. Don’t allow yourself to be deceived. Reaffirm that which in your heart of hearts you know to be the truth. You are a child of the King, created in His image, fashioned for His glory. Rebuke the deceiver when he whispers those lies in your ear. You have been redeemed…bought and paid for by the precious blood of Christ your Lord. That’s what you are worth to Him! Let’s pray!

Loving Lord; In your great mercy and grace, we know that we stand as a new creation, a great and glorious reflection of your unfailing love for us. Thank you, O Lord, for such amazing grace…such amazing love. Amen!
