October 13, 2014 “What’s In A Name?”

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2: 10-11)

Good Morning and a Blessed Lord’s Day, dear Friends!

I am certain that you share the shock, horror, and outrage at the atrocities being committed by the collective group known as “ISIS” or” ISIL” against even the most innocent of their victims. Their actions demonstrate the lengths to which the Enemy will go to advance his agenda of hatred, violence, and deception in the world. When I refer to the “Enemy” here, I am not speaking merely of the terrorist organization noted, but of it’s “General”, Satan. Jesus identifies him this way in John 8:44, “He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.” The atrocities of ISIS are consistent with this description. Since the time of the Fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, it has been Satan’s agenda to kill, steal, and destroy, taking as many victims as he can before his ultimate defeat. He hates even the Name of Jesus, for that Name above every name represents his failure. The demons tremble at the sound of it! So what does he do? He takes that beautiful name and makes it an expression of disgust on the lips of non-believers! You have heard the name of Jesus used irreverently. It’s done out of ignorance by many…intentionally by others, and Satan delights when it is used in such fashion. Of the Name of Jesus,  Christian theologian and speaker Beth Moore wrote,

“What a beautiful name. I love to watch how it falls off the lips of those who love Him. I shudder as it falls off the lips of those who don’t. Jesus.”
When you utter that Name, do it reverently, lovingly, thankfully, prayerfully. When someone you know uses it frivolously or irreverently, take the opportunity to share your faith story with them and teach them that He is Lord and He loves them. In doing so, it glorifies God and angers the Enemy. Let’s pray!

Beautiful Savior; How I love the sound of Your Great Name! It is a delight to my ears and sweet on my lips. When I speak it, may I always do so joyfully and reverently, for You are Holy and You are worthy of my continual praise. Blessed be Your Name now and forever. Amen!
