August 22, 2014 “Put It On My Tab”

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Good Morning My Friends in Christ!

Yesterday, I read an article reporting a most encouraging event that took place in a local coffee shop in the Tampa, Florida area. It seems that a customer went in to purchase his morning coffee and decided he would be kind and prepay for the customer waiting in line behind him. “Just put it on my tab” is essentially what he said. This act of “paying it forward” did not go unnoticed by the surprised and delighted customer behind him, a stranger to his benefactor. That customer decided to do the same for the person behind as well. The deed spread throughout the day. About mid-day, the customer that started this chain of good deeds came back to see if his act of kindness was still being passed on. This was 250 customers later, and it was! He continued the chain, repeating his little act of kindness. By the end of the business day, some 350+ customers passed on the good deed before the chain was finally broken. As I considered this happy report included in a collection of troubling news reports from around the world, I was reminded of a song that I learned in church camp years before and of another some time after that. The first one was called “Two and Two and Fifty”. The song began like this:

“One man’s hands can’t tear a building down…two men’s hands can’t tear a building down…

But if two and two and fifty made a million, we’d see that day come round…we’d see that day come round”

The gist of the song echoes the effect of a good deed done. It may seem like a small thing, but it can bring great reward. A similar song I learned in college also came to mind: That song was called “Pass It On”:

“It only takes a spark to get a fire going, and soon all those around can warm up to it’s glowing…

That’s how it is with God’s love once you’ve experienced it…you’ll spread his love to everyone. You want to pass it on.”

That’s how it is with God’s love. Like a tiny spark that grows into a blazing fire, the love of God spreads as we pass it on. As Paul rightly noted, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” We were made to do good works! They are contagious, and, in the end, they will win the day. Let’s pray!

Loving Lord; Make me a blessing to someone today, that they may see the good works I do and give glory to You in return. Thank you, Lord, for every blessing you so graciously impart day after day. Amen!
