August 15, 2014 “God’s Good Time”

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)

Good Morning Precious Friends!

Some years ago, there was a commercial for a ketchup manufacturer in PA (I won’t name the company, not even if you were to ask me 57 times), featuring a song by Carly Simon called “Anticipation”. It featured a bottle of the desired ketchup in hand, with the holder of a hot dog eagerly awaiting its contents to come gushing out to garnish the treat. The idea behind the commercial was to illustrate that this ketchup was so thick that one needed to learn the virtue of patience while waiting for it to come forth. Nowadays, we live in an age of instantaneous information. We expect things to come immediately. When we desire to own something, we no longer save up for it. We put it on a charge card and begin enjoying it immediately, ironically expecting our creditors to be patient as we pay it off, with interest, over time. We don’t really have trouble when others have to wait as long as we are not the ones put in such position. Want to see examples of impatience? Make a trip to your local DMV to renew your driver’s license and see what I mean! Yep! Been there…done that!

Sometimes, this spirit of “impatience” spills over into our spiritual lives. Today, there are believers who pray in much the same way, and with the same sort of expectation, as they do when sending a phone text. We compose the prayer, click the “send” button, and await an immediate response from God. But the Lord’s timetable is not necessarily the same as our timetable when it comes to responding to our requests. Theologian Oswald Chambers’ insight into this truth is helpful. He wrote,

“Most of us would prefer… to spend our time doing something that will get immediate results. We don’t want to wait for God to resolve matters in His good time because His idea of ‘good time’ is seldom in sync with ours.”

God’s “good time” is always the best time…the perfect time. It is never late, nor is it too early to be a blessing to us. It is perfect, for He is the Eternal Present. He is the One who “was and is and is to come.” It stands to reason, then that God, who always answers the prayers lifted up to Him in faith, will answer those prayers in the perfect way and at the perfect time…not always to our particular expectations but always in accordance with His perfect will and our ultimate benefit. So be patient. Rest assured that there is ketchup in the bottle. Pray with “Anticipation” and with patience. Though the answer you seek may not come as quickly as you would desire, trust in God’s perfect timing, for He always has your best interests in mind as He responds to your “text”. Let’s pray!

Dear Heavenly Father; I confess my own frustration as I await your perfect response to my own prayer requests. Remind my heart that You have heard my prayers and are ever working for my benefit, for You love me. Thank you, Lord, for all Your blessings. Thank You, Lord, for all Your love. Thank You, O LOrd, for hearing and answering my prayers in Your good time. Amen!
