May 8, 2014 “What’s That Sound?”

‘Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time.’ (James 4: 7-8)

Quick! What do these things have in common? A knife scratching on a glass bottle…fingernails scraping on cardboard…chalk squeaking on a blackboard…a whining child? Ooo…even reading about these things is irritating, isn’t it? Yep! They are all irritating sounds. Even imagining them makes me quickly want to think of something else. They can make chills run through your body. They break your concentration. Sometimes irritating noises will drive you to another room. Yesterday I was sitting out on the deck at the home of Lydia’s brother Freddy. It was a beautiful sunny day. A nice breeze was blowing. It was the picture of serenity. Then a neighbor came out to do some lawn work with one of those week whackers. That buzzing, irritating noise became too much for us and we retreated back into the house. Do you remember the movie “Ghostbusters”? In the film, there is a scene where one of the Ghostbusters begins to play a few keys on the piano repeatedly, explaining to his client that “Ghosts hate that sound.” Of course, there are sounds that are irritating to some and delightful to others. I currently live in NASCAR country. Those roaring engines drive me crazy, but thousands of fans flock to the racetrack to listen to those mighty engines whine, because they love it. Certain musical styles would drive some people out of the room while filling stadiums of fans who love the music.
Is there a sound that is music to the ears of the Christian that irritates the Enemy to no end? Yes, indeed. It is the very name of Jesus! While Christians sing “Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Sweetest name I know!” the demons shudder. Satan hates the name. It represents his defeat. Christian author S.D. Gordon wrote,

“Prayer is repeating the victor’s name (Jesus) into the ears of Satan and insisting on his retreat.”

Prayer has the same effect on Satan as chalk scraping on a blackboard does to the ears of those in the room. It drives him crazy. Yelling a loud “NO” to him when you pray will cause him to scurry away. I have an idea. Let’s all take time to irritate Satan to no end today. Let’s bombard him with the name that makes him and his minions shudder and tremble. Lift high the Name which is above every name…the name of Jesus, and watch as he flees the scene in horror. He’s certainly irritated us enough with his incessant banter. Remember, you don’t even have to shout it. Just quietly call on the Lord in prayer. Utter the sweet name of Jesus in prayer and He’ll come while Satan says “I’m outta’ here! Let’s pray!

Oh Lord Jesus! Even the sound of your name causes the demons to shudder and tremble. Your presence make the enemy take flight. Yet, we love the sound of Your Name, the source of joy and strength and comfort. How we love you, blessed King of Glory. May your Name be lifted high forever, on earth as it is in heaven. Thank you, Lord. Thank you King Jesus! Amen”
