March 28, 2014 “The Prism of Understanding”

“What I’m trying to do here is get you to relax, not be so preoccupied with getting so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep yourself in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Don’t be afraid of missing out. You’re my dearest friends! The Father wants to give you the very kingdom itself.” (Luke 12:32-The Message Bible)

Good Morning My Brothers and Sisters in the Lord!

I like reading different translations of scripture. Nuances in translations remind me of looking at light through a prism…turn it one way and you see one particular color…turn it another way and you see a different shade. It’s the same prism…the same light…but more is revealed as you do so. Today’s passage from Luke 12:32 is one of those prism passages. it may be stated quite simply, as it is in the NIV Bible: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” Turning the “prism of understanding” another way, and you have an expanded understanding as is presented in the Message Bible, noted at the heading of this post.  I like both. I like learning that it pleases God to give us the riches of his kingdom. That’s stated clearly in the NIV. I also like turning the prism for a deeper look , as Eugene Peterson has done in the Message Bible. I am reminded not to fret about things…to relax and not be so preoccupied with getting what i want from God as I pray. I don’t have to worry about it, because he’s ready to pour out his riches abundantly…”God-reality…God-initiative…God-provisions” are all part of the deal of being part of the family. Ours is a rich inheritance indeed. I am reminded that i am not going to “miss out” on anything. That’s what happened in the Garden of Eden…Adam and Eve were led to believe that somehow God was holding out on them…that they were “missing out” by not partaking of the forbidden fruit, when, in fact, they had everything they could ever need already provided by a gracious and loving God. God is not hesitant when it comes to giving good gifts. Pastor Phillips brooks wrote,

“Prayer is not conquering God’s reluctance, but taking hold of God’s willingness.”

He is telling us that we need not twist God’s arms to convince Him to give us good gifts. God is more than willing to do so. Prayer is taking hold of God’s willingness. Paul said it like this: “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” God-reality…God-initiative…God-provision are ours for the asking. We won’t miss out. After all, he wants to give us the riches of His kingdom. Let’s pray!

Gracious God: How bountiful are your gifts…how generous and loving You are toward us. Thank you for Your manifold blessings. Thank You for your boundless love and grace. Thank You for your enduring mercy. Thank You, God, for each answered prayer we make in Jesus’ blessed Name. Amen!
