December 22, 2013 “An Errand To God”

“Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back—given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.” (Luke 6:38)

Good Morning Friends in Christ!

When I was a boy of around the age of 7 or 8 (it was a long time ago…forgive my inexact memory)…I was deemed old enough to run errands to the nearby store for my mother. Usually it was to go buy a loaf of bread or some milk or butter, or perhaps deliver something to the neighbor. Sometimes it involved a request from the neighbor for a needed cup of sugar (yes, neighbors did such things back in ‘the day’). Truth be told, I wasn’t always happy to do these little errands, but more often than not, my reluctance was assuaged by the knowledge that in doing so, it made my mother happy and would, on occasion, result in a reward of some sort for me in the form of a treat or some cash usually a nickle or a dime, which in those days was good money for a kid. One could buy a bag of chips or a candy bar for a nickle then. With obedience and a willingness came reward. It is a good Biblical principle to learn as well. I would be willing to speculate that in the last week or so at least one other person, perhaps more, have solicited your prayer support for some situation. Knowing that you are a person who prays, and a brother or sister in Christ, you have been asked to intercede for someone going through a challenging time or seeking God’s guidance for some particular situation. Consider it a privilege when this is done. It demonstrates a number of things: (1) people trust in you and know that you are a man or woman of faith. (2) It demonstrates their confidence in the power of prayer and their trust in God. (3) It becomes a witness to them as you do so and they see evidence of the love of Christ in you. (4) You will be rewarded as well. Author Samuel Rutherford wrote,

“I have been benefited by praying for others; for by making an errand to God for them I have gotten something for myself.”

Are you prepared to “run an errand to God” for someone else?    As Jesus said in Luke’s gospel, “Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back-given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.” Let’s pray!

Holy God; may we regard every opportunity to intercede for another as a true blessing…one that reaps many benefits. let us not hesitate in doing good or in demonstrating the love of Christ to others in our own prayer life. As we have been blessed, so may we bless others. This we ask in Jesus’ Name and for His sake. AMEN!
