November 16, 2015 “Common Courtesy”

” But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”     (1 Corinthians 15:57)

Good Morning Children of God!

Having been some years removed from attending elementary school, I confess that I am not at all sure of the lessons being taught those precious little ones in the classroom these days. Oh, i assume they are they are taught the ‘essentials”, or the “Three R’s”, as they used to be called…reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic”. Pretty much every school still teaches them, I assume. But I am not so sure they all still teach something that was a major part of the school experience when i was growing up…proper manners. I distinctly remember being taught the importance of saying “please’ and ‘thank you”. not only at home, but also at school, and everywhere i went, for that matter. Manners were an important element of social development and of proper decorum. I certainly hope they are still taught in the public school as well as at home. When it comes to our relationship with the Almighty, proper manners and appropriate response to God’s goodness and grace are emphasized in scripture, but even if they were not, they would most certainly be appropriate.  J. oswald sanders makes this astute observation regarding our appropriate response to God:

“Even if Scripture did not exhort us to give thanks always and for all things, common courtesy would accord a prominent place to thanksgiving in our prayer lives, for we are constantly at the receiving end of God’s generosity.”

Think of all that God does for us each day. Think of the blessings of God you have already experienced this very day! You are awake. You are reading this and thinking about the blessings of God. You have life, a home, a family that loves you, a God who redeemed you. You are blessed indeed. Do not neglect to give thanks to God. Common courtesy demands it and he deserves it! let’s pray!

Generous God; Thank you for your countless blessings. Thank you for your unfailing love and grace. Thank you for life. Thank you, God, for salvation. Thank you, God, for all blessings you provide. In Jesus Blessed name. Amen!
