September 12, 2013 “Thanksgiving For Dummies”

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done.
Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name;  let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice…Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him.Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.” (1 Chronicles 16: 8-10, 29)

Good Morning Saints!

About thirty years ago, a new series of books began, with many volumes still being printed today. This was not some fictional adventure series. These were not books of romance. They were not western adventures or Sci-Fi thrillers. They were, and are, “How-To” books written specifically for the unskilled…things like “Car Repair For Dummies” or “PC Repair for Dummies”…the key words being “For Dummies”, that is, complicated things made simple enough for almost anyone to understand. It struck me today, as i was engaged in my daily Bible reading and preparing to write my daily blog, I have, more than once, mentioned the importance of praise and thanksgiving when it comes to prayer. As I was reading this morning, it struck me that this passage from 1st Chronicles might well be titled “Thanksgiving for Dummies”, for in this psalm of thanks, we discover the four elements of what real thanksgiving is all about. Thanksgiving is much more than a simple “thank you” uttered to God. There is a formula, as it were, for proper thanksgiving, included in this psalm. This “formula” includes the following elements of true thanksgiving: (1) Remembering what God has done and telling others about it. make known among the nations what he has done.” (2) Showing God’s glory to others. “Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice” (3) Offering gifts of self, time, and resources. “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before Him.”

True thankfulness is more than just saying the words. It is living the life. It involves remembering, telling, revealing God’s glory, and giving of our time, talents, and resources. That’s True “Thanksgiving for Dummies”…and for each one of us. Let’s pray!

Blessed Lord; May our expressions of thankfulness be grounded in these thanksgiving essentials- a heart that remembers, declares, glorifies, and gives. Thank you, O Lord, for your manifold blessings in our lives. Amen!
