July 28, 2013 “Where We Should Go”

“Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.” (Jeremiah 42:3)

Good Morning and a Blessed Lord’s Day to All!

It’s been a while since my bride Lydia and I have taken a trip together…just the two of us, without any particular destination in mind. Usually, we’ll go to visit our large family or make a trip for some particular occasion or event, like a study leave, a graduation, or some such event. We’ve been considering just taking a week or so to just go see some places we haven’t seen together…to experience new things together. Where shall we go? What shall we do? We’re coming up with a few ideas, but nothing determined specifically as of yet. Many of us sort of drift through life that way, with no clear direction as to where we will go or what we will do with our lives. At such times of uncertainty, it is always wise to seek direction and clarity. In this passage from Jeremiah, the scattered remnant of Israel and its once mighty army went to the prophet Jeremiah seeking direction from one they considered to be a godly man…the prophet of God. Their request showed humility and respect. “pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.” Jeremiah’s response was, “I have heard you. I will certainly pray to the Lord your God as you have requested. I will tell you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.” Jeremiah accepted their humble cry for direction, and agreed to seek the Lord’s directive. At the same time, he reminded those that sought his prayerful intervention that no matter the response that came back from God, they were to obey it. How often do we pray for God’s guidance and direction regarding which way we should go or what we should do, already having in mind what we want or expect that response to be? The Lord is certainly ready to lead, but expects us to follow that lead. The good news is that the Lord will never steer you in the wrong direction. His ways, though perhaps unexpected at times, are trustworthy and true. Trust Him. Follow Him. Obey Him. Let’s pray!

God of Wisdom and Grace; Show us this day where we should go and what we should do. We covenant to follow your lead, for your plans are always meant to prosper us and not harm us, to give us hope and a future. We will follow your lead, gracious Lord, and give you the glory always. Amen!
