July 19, 2013 “Direction and Desire”

“May he turn our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep the commands, decrees, and regulations he gave our fathers.” (1st Kings 8:58)

Good Morning Holy Nation Citizens!

As a child, I remember many vacations with my family, my dad at the wheel. Dad was a bit of an adventurer. He liked to take the road less traveled, often resulting in our getting “lost” out on the highway. Now we always had a goodly supply of maps in the car (they were free at most service stations then). My mother would unfold them and find out approximately where we were and get us headed back in a more familiar direction. These maps, by the way, were also next to impossible to fold back the way they originally were. I am grateful for the GPS and “Mapquest” directions of today (though they, too, can be a bit frustrating at times). For real reliability traveling life’s highway, however, you can’t beat God’s direction. As we continue our look at Solomon’s prayer in 1st Kings 8, we find two more important examples of how to pray. Yesterday, we learned to pray for God’s presence throughout our lives. Today, we learn to pray for God’s direction…”May he turn our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep the commands, decrees, and regulations he gave to our fathers.” It is a prayer that expresses the desire to do God’s will in everything we undertake, that “our hearts may be turned to him.” Just as a reliable GPS will (hopefully), keep us going the right direction on the highway, a heart turned to God will undoubtedly keep our feet on a reliable path in our daily lives.

The second thing Solomon prays is for the desire to obey God’s decrees and demands.  My dad liked to travel different paths, resulting in our getting lost. I actually believe that was his desire. When it comes to our life’s journey, however, Solomon’s prayer instructs us that our desire should always be to follow God’s directions to the letter. The prophet Isaiah wrote, “All we, like sheep, have gone astray. We have turned-every one-to his own way.” (Isaiah 53:6) The Good Shepherd leads us on the right path. Pray, as did Solomon, for your heart to be turned to him this day, for his direction and the desire to do His will. Let’s Pray!

God of Grace:  We confess confusion as we travel life’s highway. There are so many directions we could go, but only one which you would have us follow. Turn our hearts towards you, that we may not stumble. Stir up the desire within us to obediently and joyfully follow Your lead in each new day, that we might keep your commands and life a live that is reflective of a King’s child. To Your Holy Name be praise and thanksgiving now and forevermore. Amen!
