July 12, 2013 “The Steady Stream”

“Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: ‘It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.'” (Matthew 4:4-The Message)

Good Morning Chosen of God!

Just before sitting down to write this morning’s prayer reflection, I had a great breakfast. For my birthday, my daughter Becky bought me a new waffle maker. I mixed up some batter, put in some blueberries, heated up some real maple syrup and cooked a few pieces of bacon…delicious! Here I sit , well fed, reading of Jesus “test” in the wilderness. He had not had so much as a morsel of food in 40 days, let alone a blueberry waffle and bacon. Knowing this, Satan tempted him with food. He reminded Jesus that all he had to do was say the word and even the stones of the ground could be transformed into nourishing bread at Jesus’ command. Famished, surely Jesus would succumb to this temptation! But no! Jesus made it a practice to rely on His Heavenly Father for his “daily bread“, just as he had taught his disciples to pray. The “daily bread” for Jesus was much more than food for the body…it was food for the soul. He countered Satan’s temptation with the Word of God, saying “It takes more than (physical) bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.” Praying for God to provide our daily bread is more than requesting God to put food on the table for us. It is requesting that we would receive a “steady stream of words from God’s mouth” to guide and direct us through the day we have been given by God, that we might place total reliance on Him and not on the things of this world. Though Jesus could have easily done what Satan reminded him He could do, Jesus relied instead on that “steady stream of words”  found in Scripture and stored in his heart. As you pray today, asking God to provide your daily bread, do so realizing that the “bread” he has for you is nothing less than His own written and spoken word, designed to provide you with every resource for the day. Let’s pray!

Wise and Gracious God: Your word nourishes, protects, guides, admonishes, and strengthens us. Give us this day our daily portion of your steady stream of words that we might resist the deception of the Enemy and live a life reflective of a child of the King. This we pray in the Name of your Beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!
