April 27, 2013 “Make Me A Blessing”

“This service you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people, but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God…And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you.” (2nd Corinthians 9: 12, 14)

Good Morning dear Saints!

One of my favorite hymns is one entitled “Make me A Blessing.” The last verse of that hymn says, “Give as t’was given to you in your need; Love as the Master loved you; Be to the helpless a helper indeed; Unto your mission be true.” In this passage from 2nd Corinthians, Paul praises the Corinthian Christians for their generous support of his ministry among them.  He tells them it will “result in thanksgiving to God.” Generosity spawns thanksgiving, and thanksgiving spawns prayer and praise. Over the past weeks, I have been encouraging you to develop the discipline of daily prayer, and I will continue doing that, because daily prayer not only follows Christ’s example, but it also delights God, empowers us, and keeps us connected with our Lord.  In addition, how thrilling it is to realize that the generosity we show to others brings others to the Throne of Grace as well, and in their prayers, they remember us by name.  What a blessing! The chorus of that hymn I quoted from earlier goes “Make me a blessing…make me a blessing…out of my life may Jesus shine. Make me a blessing, O Savior I pray…make me a blessing to someone today.” Amen to that! Let’s pray!

Gracious and Glorious God, it is our sincere desire that we be  a blessing to those around us. As we reflect the love of Christ, may that reflection shine brightly in the lives of others as well, resulting in a wellspring of prayer and praise that fills the heavens with its sweet aroma. Make me a blessing to someone today. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen.
